Approved program of study leads to provisional registration for graduates

10 Jun 2022

2022 graduates of RMIT University’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) will be eligible to apply for provisional registration as a medical radiation practitioner.

The Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (the Board) approved RMIT University’s program of study in late April. The Board noted a decision by the Medical Radiation Practice Accreditation Committee (the Accreditation Committee) to accredit RMIT University's program until 30 June 2023, and the conditions the Accreditation Committee has placed on that accreditation.

The Accreditation Committee’s role is to develop and recommend accreditation standards to the Board for approval. It then assesses whether programs of study and education providers are meeting the accreditation standards and decides whether to accredit the provider and the program. The Accreditation Committee may place conditions on accreditation when standards are not fully met.

The Board considers the Accreditation Committee’s decision and report before deciding if it will approve the program as a qualification for registration as a medical radiation practitioner.

The Board agreed that the qualification gained from RMIT University makes a graduate eligible for provisional registration. Graduates of the program in 2022 must successfully complete six months of supervised practice to be eligible for general registration.

The safety of the public is paramount for the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. By approving the qualification, the Board is enabling graduates of the program to be registered and to start practice in the profession. The requirement for six months of supervised practice does not impose an unreasonable impost on practitioners. It assures the safety of the public and maintains public confidence in the medical radiation practice profession.

Registered practitioners with provisional registration must ensure they have joined the Board’s supervised practice program before they start practising and should advise potential employers that they have a requirement to complete supervised practice. Supervisors must provide assessment reports at three months and six months, using the Board’s assessment templates.

The Board’s approval of the RMIT University program ends on 30 June 2023. The Board will review the updated accreditation information when the Accreditation Committee submits its next program update later in 2022.

A list of programs of study that have been approved by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia is published on the Approved programs of study page on the Ahpra website.
